This new version transitions the HPD format from a static PDF to a dynamic, digitized, and modular interactive dashboard platform. The evolution is designed to accelerate the disclosure of health-forward materials by enabling more agile updates, seamless data integration, and expanded usability for professionals across the building industry.

The HPD Open Standard v3.0 marks a transformative shift in how building product transparency is documented and accessed. Previously, HPDs were primarily distributed as static PDFs. With this digitized standard, manufacturers can now manage and distribute their product data more effectively. The Health Product Declaration® Collaborative (HPDC) has introduced a new PFAS Attestation feature, designed to enhance transparency and support industry efforts to reduce the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in building products.

This feature gives manufacturers clear guidance on how to disclose the presence—or intentional absence—of PFAS in their products, using a standardized attestation format. It supplements the standard ingredient reporting formats available in Health Product Declaration reports, to provide greater precision in the reporting of PFAS ingredients. This is an example of the responsive and continual improvement that the HPDC Technical Committee supports to enhance transparency and health in material selection for both manufacturers and project design teams.

To support implementation, HPDC has also released new PFAS Best Practice Guidance documents. These resources help manufacturers and project teams better understand PFAS-related disclosure and integrate safer material choices into their practices.

Health Product Declaration Collaborative (HPDC) has launched the latest update to its HPD Open Standard and HPD Builder online reporting system – Version 2.3 Update.  The 11,000+ HPD reports published are helping thousands of building project design teams identify and choose building products with improved human and environmental health characteristics.

The newly announced HPD Version 2.3 Update supports the rapid pace of innovation and advancement in material health, introducing new, optional features that will aid manufacturers and project teams in more easily reporting and using complex material health data, such as antimicrobial and polymer reporting.

The Version 2.3 Update is now the effective version of the HPD Open Standard. The HPD Builder, the Supplier HPD Builder extension tool, HPD Public Repository, and APIs for electronic data exchange with other information systems have been fully updated to support Version 2.3 Update. All newly published HPDs will be published to the Version 2.3 Update Standard.

“HPD Version 2.3, which we launched a year ago, has taken the adoption of HPDs to a new level of voluntary use in the building product manufacturing sector that is unparalleled in standards that focus on material health,” said Wendy Vittori, HPDC Executive Director. “HPD adoption is accelerating, with an average of 250 new HPDs published from 40+ manufacturers every month. Over 40,000 building products from over 800 manufacturers have published HPD reports. HPD Version 2.3 Update adds many new options to help manufacturers and project teams have more accurate and precise product information reported in HPDs.  Highlights of the release are:

Anti-Microbial Reporting: Responding to user demands, HPDC has incorporated a uniform reporting method for substances with antimicrobial properties intentionally added to building products. Manufacturers can now provide optional reporting on HPDs for these substances, streamlining the disclosure process and eliminating the need for individual reporting methodologies.

Social Equity Location Indicator: Recognizing the significance of location in assessing social equity practices within supply chains, HPDC has integrated a powerful tool that leverages various databases related to location-based information. This tool enables manufacturers to gain insights into their supply chain performance. In the future HPD users can utilize it to apply for certifications based on social equity indicators.

Product Type Field: To enhance product specificity and improve searchability, HPDC has introduced a comprehensive product type field. This feature provides a translation of Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) numbers, making it easier for users unfamiliar with CSI classifications to understand the products’ characteristics.

Polymer Special Condition: HPDC recognizes the importance of educating manufacturers and their supply chains about the hazards associated with polymers. Hazards related to polymers can be complicated and confusing. To address this, HPD v2.3 includes a reporting methodology for polymers without a Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number (CAS RN), ensuring thorough disclosure of polymer-related hazards.

ChemFORWARD: As part of HPDC’s commitment to supporting optimization in the built environment, HPD v2.3 introduces ChemFORWARD as an additional listing. This innovative addition highlights hazards and provides information on safer alternatives. By promoting the adoption of safer alternatives, HPDC aims to drive healthier and more optimized choices within the industry.

First released in 2012, the HPD Open Standard is harmonized with reporting for leading sustainability rating systems for buildings, such as LEED and WELL; the mindful Materials CMF; and certifications for building products, such as Cradle to Cradle Certified™, Declare, Green Seal, GreenScreen Certified™ and BIFMA LEVEL®.  When manufacturers report their information using the HPD Open Standard, costly repetitive and duplicative reporting steps can be eliminated.  By publishing an HPD report in the HPD Public Repository, manufacturers can make their detailed product information publicly available and electronically transmit their data to product libraries, such as Mindful MATERIALS, Ecomedes, and Sustainable Minds.

The Transparency Catalog is the most comprehensive, curated, and continually updated source of high-performance, low-carbon, healthy building and construction products. The platform features all the manufacturers making products and materials for the North American market who have invested in product transparency documentation providing free access to all their documents – ISO 14025 type III environmental declarations (EPDs) and Health Product Declarations (HPDs). EPDs quantify environmental performance information on the life cycle of a product to enable comparisons between products fulfilling the same function. HPDs provide a full disclosure of the potential chemicals of concern by screening the ingredients against a set of priority human and environmental health ‘hazard’ lists based on the GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals. Improving Product and Material Selection with Better Visibility into Data

The new Perkins&Will Precautionary List Free filter is one of the latest initiatives to make it easier for the AECO sector to meet project goals through informed, simplified product and material selection. Through close collaboration between HPDC and Sustainable Minds, Transparency Catalog users can now access critical HPD data to identify the products that meet the requirements of the Precautionary List from Perkins&Will, a firm-wide mandate to screen all products being considered for projects for toxic chemicals (in more than 50 categories).

Supporting Healthy Material Selection through Collaboration with Perkins&Will

To date, 2,639 v2.3 HPDs have been published and added to the Transparency Catalog. Users can now find 553 HPDs reporting Perkins&Will Precautionary List free products, with that number continually increasing as more HPDs are published.

HPDC Automates Product Screening for HPD-reported Information

Pre-check HPDs for Compliance with a Wide Range of Material Health Rating and Certification Programs

San Francisco, Calif., November 3, 2022 – Today the Health Product Declaration (HPD) Collaborative introduced new capabilities for the HPD Builder and HPD Public Repository information management systems. This will automate the time-consuming task of screening product information for compliance with various material health program criteria. 

Introduced in 2012, the HPD Open Standard provides an accurate, reliable and consistent reporting method for complex product chemical, human and environmental health information.  Over 10,000 HPD reports have been made public to date, providing an unprecedented level of detailed product information that is available for building project design teams to use when selecting products.

Using the automated “HPD Program Pre-check” and the HPD archive in the HPD Public Repository, project team members in participating programs will be able to easily and quickly find products that are compliant with the material health criteria established for their project.  For example, if a project wishes to select products that do not contain a restricted list of chemicals, the HPD Program Pre-check can automatically screen HPDs for compliance with these and other criteria.

A project design team often reviews hundreds of products during the selection phase.  “The time and expertise required for manual screening of material health data has presented a significant barrier to wider adoption of material health practice,” said Wendy Vittori, Executive Director, HPDC.  “With these new capabilities, a firm can define the criteria one time and any project team member will be able quickly apply them and get immediate results using the HPD Program Pre-check.”

HPD Program Pre-check also provides significant benefits for manufacturers.  Using their private HPD Builder account, manufacturers can access program criteria and immediately see what their customers are preferring in material health product features.  Screening against the program criteria is automated in the HPD Builder, so manufacturers gain the same time-saving benefits as do project teams.  And, with this knowledge, manufacturers can provide specific feedback to their product design teams where improvements are indicated.
