Using HPDs for LEED compliance
A single reference page covering the HPD requirements for LEED v4, v4.1 Material Ingredients and LEED v5 Building Product Selection and Procurement (BPSP) credits.
Building Product Disclosure & Optimization — Material Ingredients
All HPD versions 1.0–2.3 accepted
Option 1
Material ingredient reporting
HPD reported at least down to 1,000 ppm, with all substances "Identified," residuals and impurities identified, and publicly published.
Option 2
Material ingredient optimization
HPD meeting all requirements of Option 1, but reported at 100 ppm and with no BM-1 or LT-1 GreenScreen scores.
What your HPD needs to qualify
- All ingredients identified to 0.1% by weight (1,000 ppm)
- Screening reported as "Yes"
- Screened against Clean Production Action's GreenScreen Specified Lists, Cradle to Cradle RSL, ILFI Red List, GSPI Six Classes, or other approved lists
- Published in the HPD Public Repository
- Current at time of product use
Either option satisfies the credit. USGBC sets the credit requirements and thresholds — check their current documentation before submitting.
Building Product Disclosure & Optimization — Material Ingredients
Same structure as v4, with a bonus for third-party verified HPDs
Option 1
Material ingredient reporting
HPD reported at least down to 1,000 ppm, with all substances "Identified," residuals and impurities identified, and publicly published.
Option 2
Optimization, expanded
HPD meeting all requirements of Option 1, third-party verified, with no GreenScreen BM-1 or LT-1 scores. USGBC's current credit language governs the exact test.
What's different from v4
- Third-party verified HPDs count as 1.5 products rather than 1
- Option 2 adds further qualifying pathways beyond GreenScreen
- The HPD must still be valid (not expired) at time of product purchase and installation
For which specific HPDs qualify for v4.1 points, HPDC maintains the current answer:

Building Product Selection & Procurement (BPSP)
New in v5Replaces the separate Material Ingredients credit. Products are scored across five criteria areas — Human Health, Climate Health, Ecosystem Health, Social Health & Equity, and Circular Economy — and those scores roll up into LEED points through USGBC's calculator.
What an HPD scores
USGBC's scoring table lists two HPD pathways, both in the Human Health criteria area:
- Level 1 — scores 1. A published, complete HPD to 1,000 ppm, with full disclosure of known hazards per the HPD Open Standard, published in the HPD Public Repository, and passing the LEED PreCheck.
- Level 2 — scores 2. A third-party verified HPD passing the LEED v4.1 Option 2 PreCheck, reported to 100 ppm, verifying either no GreenScreen LT-1 hazards or no GHS Category 1 hazards in the end-use product.
Either way the document must show the covered product name, type and description, a unique ID number, the inventory assessment threshold, and a validity period.
The BPSP PreCheck in HPD Builder applies the same requirements as the LEED v4.1 Option 1 PreCheck, plus Product Type.
How multi-attribute scoring works
- Achievement levels are worth 1x (Level 1), 2x (Level 2) and 3x (Level 3) — the same across all five criteria areas.
- A product with more than one qualifying document combines scores across different criteria areas.
- Scores within a single criteria area are not additive — the product is assigned the highest value it achieves in that area.
- Level 3 is not yet defined. USGBC lists it as under development.
USGBC maintains the full list of qualifying documentation and what each one scores, and revises it through the LEED addenda process. Always work from their current version rather than a copy. The Building Products Calculator sits on the credit page under "Resources and tips."
