June Greetings to our HPD Collaborative Community!

I want to begin this newsletter with a big Thank You!

Your efforts this year have lifted transparent material health to a new level of adoption and capabilities:

  • We passed the 11,000 published HPDs mark, voluntarily created by over 800 building product manufacturers!  Representing well over 40,000 building products, HPDs provide vital content inventory and the associated human and environmental health information that is needed to reduce and eliminate the use of substances of concern healthier and safer for everyone.
  • Version 2.3 of the HPD Open Standard, introduced in July 2022, enables screening – at the individual ingredient level – for the most widely used Restricted Substance Lists, such as ILFI Red List, C2C Restricted List, and Six Classes. Congratulations to all manufacturers publishing HPDs in this period – see the list below for over 200 manufacturers who have published over 2500 new HPDs in the past nine months.
  • With our new Digital Data API, we are now providing our building product library and project team tool ecosystem partners with the full HPD digital dataset.  This gives the ability to filter and select products that have the preferred human and environmental health qualities that project teams are seeking, using HPD-reported data, all right in the project tools that project teams use every day.

And we have many new capabilities set to launch in 2023:

  • Version 2.3 Update release – slated for this summer, will introduce new features such as antimicrobial screening, polymer special conditions, and an exciting new “Product Type” feature that maps common product descriptions to precise CSI classifications.
  • Program Pre-check – you’ve been hearing about this feature for a while, and we are ready to launch our pilot program participants in production this summer.  This feature expands the LEED Precheck to many additional programs.  It automates screening HPDs for compliance with program criteria, saving considerable time and effort for both manufacturers and project teams.
We are gearing up for our main 2023 events:
    • Greenbuild September 26-29 – we are planning again this year for our booth and several special sessions for Greenbuild – back in DC!  It will be an excellent opportunity to meet in person, including at our HPDC Annual Member Meeting, which will be on September 26 from 5:00-7:00.
    • Material Health Open Innovation Symposium IV – taking place virtually on November 14th, this event allows you to snapshot the past year’s progress on the leading edge of material health practice.

Finally – HPDC member growth is accelerating!  Over 400 companies are now HPDC members.  Through your membership, you support our collaborative effort to accelerate transparency and safer materials in the building industry.  If you are not yet an HPDC member, please consider supporting our efforts by clicking this link to join HPDC today

All the best, Wendy

In the News: Sustainable Minds Partners with Health Product Declaration Collaborative and Perkins&Will to Advance Healthy Material Selection

Sustainable Minds, a leading provider of comprehensive product transparency solutions, has partnered with Health Product Declaration® Collaborative (HPDC) and Perkins&Will® to automate material health selection criteria for the AECO (architecture, engineering, construction and operations) sector. This collaboration introduces a revolutionary filter for its Transparency Catalog, the Precautionary List Free filter, enabling project teams to select building materials and products that meet rigorous human health requirements. The filter provides critical data for improved product and material selection, supports healthier material selection, and streamlines project workflows, making it more accessible to meet project goals.

In the News: Joining forces for healthier buildings: HPDC and IES partner to fight toxic chemicals with smart software tools

Integrated Eco Strategy (IES) and Health Product Declaration Collaborative (HPDC) have formed a strategic partnership to eliminate toxic chemicals from buildings. By combining HPD data with IES software, this collaboration aims to empower the building industry to make informed decisions about materials, reduce the use of toxic chemicals, and create healthier buildings. The partnership enables owners, architects, and builders to identify and avoid toxic chemicals in thousands of building materials and products.

Welcoming New Board Members to HPDC

We are delighted to announce the addition of several esteemed individuals to the board of the Health Product Declaration Collaborative (HPDC). Their expertise and passion for advancing transparency and material health in the built environment make them valuable additions to our organization. Please join us in welcoming our new board members:

David Johnson

Expert leader in integrated design in the built environment. Award-winning architect, designer, urban planner, and systems innovator. David is currently the director of Projects at AGI Avant, a development firm focused on creating regenerative communities in the bay area. He has held public office in Marin County and is currently the Chair of the Climate Action Committee in the Town of Corte Madera. David is currently active with the AIA, ULI, and SPUR. He’s also an advisor to The Healthy Building Network, the Green Science Policy Institute, the California Forward Capital Market Task Force, Build It Green (Board Member), and DrawDownBayArea.org. He frequently lectures at universities on sustainable design and was a Design Studio Instructor at Stanford University. At COP26 David was named one of the 500 global sustainability thought leaders by the American Energy Society.

Lisa Britton

Lisa has held management and executive positions in building products manufacturing for over 30 years. In each role, she led her company’s efforts to develop more sustainable products and practices. Her accomplishments include founding Alpar Architectural Products to manufacturer wall and corner guards and sheet wall protection from a variety of environmentally preferable materials, including the industry’s first fire-rated biobased polymer, which she worked closely with a chemist to develop. While with Alpar, she participated in the HPD pilot project and was one of the first manufacturers to publish HPDs and Declare labels. She also worked with the Pharos project team to release the wall protection category. She joined Industrial Louvers (ILI) and Verta, Inc. in 2014, where she made transparency and sustainability central to the companies’ business strategies and operations. She led efforts to achieve a Living Product Challenge (LPC) certified product and played a leading role in Verta, Inc. becoming the first chrome-free PVDF applicator. Britton was co-chair of HPDC’s first Manufacturers Advisory Panel and served as vice chair of the HPDC technical committee for seven years.

Doug Gatlin

Doug Gatlin has worked for more than 25 years on the design and development of voluntary market transformation programs, including some of the nation’s most recognizable initiatives including LEED and ENERGY STAR. Before becoming CEO of Green Seal in 2018, Doug held leadership positions at the U.S. Green Building Council for 12 years and the U.S. EPA for ten. In addition to his experience leading mission based organizations, Doug brings experience in standards development, product and personnel certification and product management. At Green Seal, Doug has overseen new growth and vitality and has spearheaded the launch of new initiatives such as a raw material hazard screening initiative, an ingredient transparency label for cleaning products and the development of new criteria for recognizing sustainability improvements in packaging. Doug earned an undergraduate degree from Duke and has a Masters in Energy and Environmental Policy from Georgetown.
