HPDC’s Spring News: Advancing Material Health Practice and Leadership

Spring is here, and with it comes new growth for our material health community. Exciting updates to the HPD Public Repository are just around the corner, promising to make material health practice better, faster, and more cost-effective. Stay tuned for our announcement later this month!

In the meantime, we have more great news to share:

  • Social Equity – In partnership with Design for Freedom by Grace Farms, we’ve launched an online version of the Design for Freedom Toolkit Supplier Questionnaire, helping manufacturers understand potential forced labor issues in their supply chain and manufacturing processes. Learn More.
  • HPDC Leadership – annually HPDC members have the opportunity to join the HPDC leadership team, through our Open Call for Applicants for Board Membership, Technical Committee, and Technical Sub-Groups. Over 70 of your fellow HPDC members volunteer as leaders in these committees. Thank you to all of our HPDC members who so generously give their ideas and resources to help us chart the future of material health practice.

I am delighted to announce the members of our 2024 HPDC Board of Directors and Technical Committee, and to introduce the newly-elected HPDC Board Chair, Mike Manzi. Mike steps into the Board Chair role following more than a decade of contributions to HPDC, as a member and chair of our Technical Committee, and Board Member. Mike is Associate Principal, Specifications and Document Quality Manager, at Bora Architecture and Interiors, in Portland, Oregon. Share ideas with Mike on his newly-launched blog, “Thoughts from the Chair”.

A heartfelt thank you to all our HPDC Members and Sponsors for your support through your volunteer efforts and – importantly – your financial contributions. Your support is essential to delivering the HPD Open Standard, HPD Builder, Public Repository, and connecting accurate, reliable, and consistent HPD-reported data with our ecosystem data partners. If you appreciate HPDC’s work and aren’t yet a member, please consider joining today. With your support, HPDs have become the leading method for transparent material health reporting, and more exciting developments are coming soon.

All the best, – Wendy

Wendy Vittori, HPDC, Executive Director

A New Resource Helping Transform Material Health Through Social Equity

The Health Product Declaration Collaborative (HPDC) and Grace Farms are proud to announce the online availability of the Design for Freedom Supplier Questionnaire, an initiative developed by the HPDC Social Equity Technical Sub-Group (TSG) to promote sustainability and social equity in the building industry. This groundbreaking tool is designed for manufacturers to benchmark their social equity practices, with the results benefiting all stakeholders by empowering architects and specifiers to make informed decisions when selecting building products.

Sustainable Minds and NRMCA Collaborate to Advance Transparency in Ready Mixed Concrete

Sustainable Minds and the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) have collaborated to create ‘Example Product’ Health Product Declarations (HPDs) for all strength categories in the industry-average Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for ready mixed concrete. This partnership enables concrete producers to develop product-specific EPDs and HPDs, contributing to green building rating systems credits. A recent webinar discussed the importance of transparency, highlighted NRMCA’s sustainable certification programs, and introduced Sustainable Minds’ Transparency Catalog Project Builder & Library, a collaborative workflow solution for accessible low-carbon and healthy material selection.

Copper Development Association & WAP Sustainability: Pioneering Material Health Transparency in the Metal Industry

At Material Health Symposium IV, the Copper Development Association and WAP Sustainability shared innovative strategies to integrate Health Product Declarations (HPDs) for metal alloys. By leveraging industry standards, creating accessible alloy databases, and developing best practices for reporting, they are pioneering material health transparency in the metal industry. Their efforts mark an important step towards a unified framework for communicating metal alloy content in HPDs, empowering manufacturers and stakeholders with clear, reliable material health information.
