Material Health Practice – The Next Steps In Transparency.

September always brings a surge of fresh energy and excitement. As we start to plan for coming events and the year ahead, it is a time when we naturally reflect on the progress that has been made, and where we are now positioned. What’s becoming clear is that in 2022 we are moving from the primary focus of material health innovation being on how to inventory and screen materials, to how to assess and optimize both the products and our building designs.

Getting to these next steps in advancing material health practice relies upon the extraordinary level of collaboration that we have achieved in this past decade, as a community of material health practitioners. Starting with the early Material Health Harmonization Task Group and its ground-breaking harmonization report in 2015, we have coalesced around the common cause of transparency with this information – to a level that is exceptional for any industry segment. With the support of over 700 manufacturers, transparent, standards-compliant material health reporting is now available for over 40,000 building products. And, it is growing faster than ever – with over 500 new HPDs published just since the launch of Version 2.3 in July.

The complexity of material health data and methods necessitates automation to scale beyond a small number of products and projects. Supporting practitioners with high quality, comprehensive, transparent product-specific information has been the purpose of our work at HPDC since we began in 2012. And now, with the growing adoption of the HPD Open Standard and the new capabilities available in Version 2.3, we are positioned to make the next steps of product and project assessment and optimization much more accessible to manufacturers and project design teams alike.

Together with our ecosystem partners, we will be sharing updates on these new capabilities at Greenbuild. We hope that many of you will be able to attend and be with us at the HPDC Annual Member Meeting – which we will have in person in San Francisco on November 1, for the first time since 2019. Our upcoming Material Health Open Innovation Symposium on November 15 will continue as a virtual event, and is a great opportunity to share your leading edge innovations with our community. This year we are significantly enhancing our virtual platform for the Symposium, offering new participant networking and ecosystem partner capabilities. See more information in the stories below.

Thank you for all you are doing to advance Material Health Practice!

All the best, – Wendy

2022 Material Health Innovation Awards–Submit Your Product or Project Innovation by November 4, 2022.

Building Design Teams and Manufacturers are invited to share their organizations’ breakthrough Material Health innovations with colleagues during the Symposium. Four case study presentations (two from project teams and two from product manufacturers) will be selected to receive the new, Material Health Innovation Presentation award. Selections will be for those case studies that best demonstrate performance and results at the “leading edge” of Material Health innovation. Each of these case studies will be highlighted during the Symposium with a 15-minute presentation by the authors. All submissions that meet the entry requirements will be recognized with the Material Health Innovation Honorable Mention award, and will be included in the Symposium proceedings. All accepted case studies will also be featured in the new “Innovators” section of the HPDC website.

You can view all materials from last year’s symposium here.

The deadline to submit is November 4, 2022, 5 PM Pacific Time.

HPD Builder V2.3 Experiences Rapid Increase In Published HPD Reports.

One of the driving purposes for the continuing evolution and updated versions of the HPD Open Standard and Builder is to make creating and publishing product HPDs easier and more accessible for manufacturers. And the results are already in!

On July 11, 2022 HPDC launched the latest update to its HPD Builder online reporting system, version 2.3. And since the date of release, over 400 new v2.3 HPDs have been published!

The new HPD Version 2.3 emphasizes advances in data quality and consistency, and automation of new data screening options. The July launch also coincided with a key milestone: 10,000+ HPD reports published to date provide data about product materials that make sourcing healthier products in green building easier than ever..

“The collaboration among the manufacturers, architects, nonprofits, and everyone represented on our technical committees made this latest advance in the HPD Open Standard possible,” said Tristan Roberts, Chief Technologist for the HPD Collaborative. “No regulation made us release a new version. It’s living proof that human and environmental health can be advanced through a voluntary, consensus process.”
