A New Resource Helping Transform Material Health Through Social Equity

The Health Product Declaration Collaborative (HPDC) and Grace Farms are proud to announce the online availability of the Design for Freedom Supplier Questionnaire, an initiative developed by the HPDC Social Equity Technical Sub-Group (TSG) to promote sustainability and social equity in the building industry. This groundbreaking tool is designed for manufacturers to benchmark their social equity practices, with the results benefiting all stakeholders by empowering architects and specifiers to make informed decisions when selecting building products.

Sustainable Minds and NRMCA Collaborate to Advance Transparency in Ready Mixed Concrete

Sustainable Minds and the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) have collaborated to create ‘Example Product’ Health Product Declarations (HPDs) for all strength categories in the industry-average Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for ready mixed concrete. This partnership enables concrete producers to develop product-specific EPDs and HPDs, contributing to green building rating systems credits. A recent webinar discussed the importance of transparency, highlighted NRMCA’s sustainable certification programs, and introduced Sustainable Minds’ Transparency Catalog Project Builder & Library, a collaborative workflow solution for accessible low-carbon and healthy material selection.

Simplifying Material Health Integration in Project Planning

In our continuous quest to make sustainable building practices more accessible and efficient, we’re excited to announce the launch of the HPD Builder Program Pre-Check. This innovative tool, introduced in September, is designed to revolutionize how project teams incorporate material health into their product selection processes.

Key Benefits of the Program Pre-Check:

• Ease of Use: The Program Pre-Check automates the evaluation of HPD reports, aligning them seamlessly with your firm’s specific material health requirements.
• Time-Saving: By automating the evaluation process, project teams can significantly reduce the time spent assessing products, allowing more focus on design and implementation.
• Enhanced Collaboration: Manufacturers can easily check their products against your Program Pre-Check, streamlining communication and ensuring that the products you choose align with your material health values.

For Architecture and Design Firms:
Architecture, design, and other product-selecting firms can now easily integrate the HPD Builder Program Pre-Check into their workflows. This tool empowers you to make informed decisions quickly, ensuring that your project aligns with the highest standards of material health.

For Manufacturers:
Manufacturers are encouraged to utilize the Program Pre-Check to demonstrate alignment with specific health and sustainability criteria. This not only simplifies the process for project teams but also highlights your commitment to transparency and environmental responsibility.

Looking Forward:
Coming in December, we’re further enhancing the HPD Public Repository with advanced features. These will enable project teams to filter the entire digital database of over 5,000 HPD reports to find products that meet even the most detailed material health requirements.

The HPD Builder Program Pre-Check is more than a tool; it’s a step towards a future where sustainable building practices are the norm, not the exception. By simplifying and streamlining the process of incorporating material health into project planning, we’re making it easier for everyone to build a healthier, more sustainable world.

2023 Material Health Innovation Awards–Submit Your Product or Project Innovation by October 31st, 2023.

Building Design Teams and Manufacturers are invited to share their organizations’ breakthrough Material Health innovations with colleagues during the Symposium. Four case study presentations (two from project teams and two from product manufacturers) will be selected to receive the new, Material Health Innovation Presentation award. Selections will be for those case studies that best demonstrate performance and results at the “leading edge” of Material Health innovation. Each of these case studies will be highlighted during the Symposium with a 15-minute presentation by the authors. All submissions that meet the entry requirements will be recognized with the Material Health Innovation Honorable Mention award, and will be included in the Symposium proceedings. All accepted case studies will also be featured in the new “Innovators” section of the HPDC website.

HPD Builder V2.3 Update: Unlock the Full Potential of This Pivotal Enhancement

The Health Product Declaration Collaborative (HPDC) is elated to introduce the HPD Open Standard v2.3 Update, a game changing enhancement to the Health Product Declaration (HPD) Open Standard.

On July 20, 2023 HPDC launched the latest update to its HPD Builder online reporting system, the version 2.3 update.

The new HPD Version 2.3 emphasizes advances in data quality and consistency, and automation of new data screening options. The July launch also coincided with a key milestone: 10,000+ HPD reports published to date provide data about product materials that make sourcing healthier products in green building easier than ever..

“The collaboration among the manufacturers, architects, nonprofits, and everyone represented on our technical committees made this latest advance in the HPD Open Standard possible,” said Tristan Roberts, Chief Technologist for the HPD Collaborative. “No regulation made us release a new version. It’s living proof that human and environmental health can be advanced through a voluntary, consensus process.”

Open Call for Applicants: HPDC 2024 Board of Directors Nominations.

The Health Product Declaration Collaborative (HPDC) is now accepting nominations for its 2024 Board of Directors. If you’re passionate about improving the material health of the built environment, this is your opportunity to lead and make an impact.

• Deadline for Nominations: UPDATE! Monday October 2nd, 2023, 11:59 PM PDT
• Seats Available: 4 in User category, 1 in Ecosystem, 1 in Manufacturer, and 2 in Community category.
• Term: January 1, 2024 – December 31, 2026
• Eligibility: Must be a registered representative and employee of an HPDC General Member organization.

In the News: Joining forces for healthier buildings: HPDC and IES partner to fight toxic chemicals with smart software tools

Integrated Eco Strategy (IES) and Health Product Declaration Collaborative (HPDC) have formed a strategic partnership to eliminate toxic chemicals from buildings. By combining HPD data with IES software, this collaboration aims to empower the building industry to make informed decisions about materials, reduce the use of toxic chemicals, and create healthier buildings. The partnership enables owners, architects, and builders to identify and avoid toxic chemicals in thousands of building materials and products.

Their expertise and passion for advancing transparency and material health in the built environment make them valuable additions to our organization. Please join us in welcoming our new board members:

David Johnson

Expert leader in integrated design in the built environment. Award-winning architect, designer, urban planner, and systems innovator. David is currently the director of Projects at AGI Avant, a development firm focused on creating regenerative communities in the bay area. He has held public office in Marin County and is currently the Chair of the Climate Action Committee in the Town of Corte Madera. David is currently active with the AIA, ULI, and SPUR. He’s also an advisor to The Healthy Building Network, the Green Science Policy Institute, the California Forward Capital Market Task Force, Build It Green (Board Member), and DrawDownBayArea.org. He frequently lectures at universities on sustainable design and was a Design Studio Instructor at Stanford University. At COP26 David was named one of the 500 global sustainability thought leaders by the American Energy Society.

Lisa Britton

Lisa has held management and executive positions in building products manufacturing for over 30 years. In each role, she led her company’s efforts to develop more sustainable products and practices. Her accomplishments include founding Alpar Architectural Products to manufacturer wall and corner guards and sheet wall protection from a variety of environmentally preferable materials, including the industry’s first fire-rated biobased polymer, which she worked closely with a chemist to develop. While with Alpar, she participated in the HPD pilot project and was one of the first manufacturers to publish HPDs and Declare labels. She also worked with the Pharos project team to release the wall protection category. She joined Industrial Louvers (ILI) and Verta, Inc. in 2014, where she made transparency and sustainability central to the companies’ business strategies and operations. She led efforts to achieve a Living Product Challenge (LPC) certified product and played a leading role in Verta, Inc. becoming the first chrome-free PVDF applicator. Britton was co-chair of HPDC’s first Manufacturers Advisory Panel and served as vice chair of the HPDC technical committee for seven years.

Doug Gatlin

Doug Gatlin has worked for more than 25 years on the design and development of voluntary market transformation programs, including some of the nation’s most recognizable initiatives including LEED and ENERGY STAR. Before becoming CEO of Green Seal in 2018, Doug held leadership positions at the U.S. Green Building Council for 12 years and the U.S. EPA for ten. In addition to his experience leading mission based organizations, Doug brings experience in standards development, product and personnel certification and product management. At Green Seal, Doug has overseen new growth and vitality and has spearheaded the launch of new initiatives such as a raw material hazard screening initiative, an ingredient transparency label for cleaning products and the development of new criteria for recognizing sustainability improvements in packaging. Doug earned an undergraduate degree from Duke and has a Masters in Energy and Environmental Policy from Georgetown.
