Dear HPD Collaborative community members –

The past three months have continued the whirlwind of activity for us at HPDC. We are forging ahead with our HPD Open Standard Version 2.3 implementation – with launch firming up for Q1 of next year. Exciting new features in HPD Builder and Public Repository are also in development, making it easier for manufacturers and project teams to learn about requirements and pre-check HPDs for a wider range of certification and rating programs – just as is possible today for the LEED Material Ingredient credit.

These advancements in the HPD Open Standard and systems are supporting rapid innovation in material health practice. On November 16, the Material Health Open Innovation Symposium offers you a super-efficient way to update your knowledge of what’s happening on the leading edge. From the keynote by material health pioneer, Robin Guenther, principal at Perkins&Will, to the closing panel with key ecosystem partners, you will gain knowledge you can apply immediately to advance your own work. Registration is complimentary – see below for more information or click this link to register now.

**There is still time to submit your product or project innovation to be selected for the inaugural Material Health Innovation Awards before the November 10 deadline. Four case studies will be chosen for presentation at the Symposium. All qualifying submissions will be included in the conference proceedings.

Don’t miss this opportunity to share and inspire – Click here for more information on submitting your team’s accomplishments.

Our HPDC team traveled to San Diego for Greenbuild, not knowing exactly what to expect, with the pandemic impacts still with us. Happily, it was a real success –and, just wonderful to be together in person again. A highlight of the week was our announcement of a new collaboration with Green Seal®. Starting with their newly-updated Paint and Sealant certification, we will be working with them to fully harmonize and streamline data reporting with Green Seal certifications and HPDs. Together with mindful Materials we had such a great time at our “Transparency After Dark” reception!

In preparing this message I looked back to where we were a year ago – surely it has been a time of many challenges – yet there has been remarkable progress in our material health ecosystem. In the past year, published version 2 HPDs have increased almost 30%, the number of building products with HPDs are well over 30,000, and the number of LEED projects pursuing the Material Ingredient Credit has doubled to over 2,000. This happens because of your commitment and work to advance material health practice in your products, in your projects – thank you!

A special thank you to our HPD Collaborative members – in addition to all you do to advance material health in your work, your financial support through your member dues and sponsorships makes our work possible – to the benefit of everyone in the broader community of Material Health practice. Please join us for the HPDC Annual Member Meeting and Happy Hour– to be held virtually on November 16 – following the Symposium, 5:00-6:15 PM EST. Click here to register.

Inaugural Material Health Innovation Awards – Submit your Product or Project Innovation by November 10, 2021.

Building Design Teams and Manufacturers are invited to share their organizations’ breakthrough Material Health innovations with colleagues during the Symposium. Four case study presentations (two from project teams and two from product manufacturers) will be selected to receive the new, Material Health Innovation Presentation award. Selections will be for those case studies that best demonstrate performance and results at the “leading edge” of Material Health innovation. Each of these case studies will be highlighted during the Symposium with a 15-minute presentation by the authors. All submissions that meet the entry requirements will be recognized with the Material Health Innovation Honorable Mention award, and will be included in the Symposium proceedings. All accepted case studies will also be featured in the new “Innovators” section of the HPDC website.

The deadline to submit is November 10, 2021, 5 PM Pacific Time.

Call for Social Equity Technical Sub-Group Applicants.

The Health Product Declaration Collaborative (HPDC) is now seeking applicants for Social Equity Technical Sub-Group (SE TSG), with terms commencing in December, 2021.

The Ad Hoc SE TSG is being formed based on the recommendation of the Working Group on Social Equity, which launched in May 2021 from volunteer HPDC members and HPDC Staff, including several HPDC Board Members. The Working Group explored how issues of social equity in human and environmental health intersect with material health reporting and disclosure practices of the HPD Open Standard. The Working Group surveyed social equity indicators in use in rating and certification programs that emphasize material health. Based on this analysis, the Working Group has recommended that consideration be given to adding data elements to the Standard. The SE TSG will develop proposals in this area and advance them to the Technical Committee and Board of Directors for approval.

The Open Call for Applicants opened on November 1 and closes on November 19. SE TSG appointments will be made by Technical Committee on December 2 and the first meeting will be held on December 15, 2021. The SE TSG will meet monthly on an ongoing basis, thereafter.

Terms for SE TSG members are two years with a maximum of three consecutive terms.

The deadline to submit applications for the Social Equity TSG is 5:00 PM PST Monday, November 29, 2021.

HPD Collaborative and Green Seal Form Strategic Alliance to Advance Transparency Standards and Data Harmonization.

HPD Collaborative (HPDC) and Green Seal® announced a strategic alliance in September during Greenbuild 2021 to bring the expertise and certification leadership of Green Seal into alignment with the capabilities of the HPD Open Standard. The alliance will enable building product manufacturers to simplify their data management and reporting when they use both the HPD reporting format and the Green Seal certification program, using an automated data exchange.

The first collaboration coincides with Green Seal’s newly revised paints standard Edition 4.0, which was issued in September 2021. HPDC and Green Seal will launch a pilot for dual reporting and certification programs for manufacturers who produce paint and/or use paint as an ingredient in their building products.

“Not only are consumers demanding transparency these days, but leading manufacturers are requiring transparency in ingredient disclosure from their suppliers,” said Doug Gatlin, CEO of Green Seal. “The goal of this partnership is simple: align reporting metrics and methods for greater ease of use by suppliers and manufacturers throughout the building industry. Green Seal is excited to be part of this important collaborative effort.”

“Transparency in reporting and optimization for improved material health makes products more attractive to project teams. Increasingly architects, designers and others who select and specify building products are showing a preference for products with these features. These efforts by manufacturers also demonstrate industry leadership and due diligence with Sustainability and ESG compliance,” said Wendy Vittori, Executive Director of HPDC.

Greenbuild 2021 – A Burst of Needed Energy in San Diego!

Although attendance was lower than usual, we had lots of visitors, and newcomers to material health practice – stop by our Greenbuild booth. The new Manufacturer Quick Start course was a big hit! HPDC’s Wendy Vittori, Tristan Roberts and Paula Schaper answered questions, showed new technology and educational tools and registered people for the Material Health Symposium II on November 16.

The “Transparency After Dark” event, co-hosted by mindful MATERIALS and HPDC, was a rousing success! It was great to see so many people at Half Door Brewery in downtown San Diego for the outdoor after-party event. The relaxed atmosphere was ideal for green minded folks to mix, mingle, get to know others with similar interests and enjoy their evening.

Thanks everyone who made this event so special!
